Laboratory leadership & quality systems
He built national quality-control laboratories for livestock inputs and animal-source food. They run validated AAS, HPLC, LC-MS/MS and MALDI-TOF MS methods under a quality system aligned with ISO/IEC 17025.
DVM · MS · PhD | Veterinary Scientist
He has served 25+ years in Bangladesh's Department of Livestock Services, moving from field veterinary practice to leading the country's livestock research institute. His work spans dairy cattle fertility, fetal programming, food safety and antimicrobial resistance.
About
Dr. Kamal joined the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) in 1999 as a Veterinary Surgeon. He went on to serve as Upazila Livestock Officer, District Livestock Officer, Project Director of the Quality Control Laboratory Establishment Project, and Principal of the Institute of Livestock Science and Technology, Netrokona. In August 2023 he became Director of the Livestock Research Institute in Mohakhali, Dhaka.
He ranked first in his DVM class at Bangladesh Agricultural University and won the University Gold Medal for his MS. His PhD covered the clinical management of postpartum anoestrous cows using ultrasonography. At Ghent University, Belgium, he studied how a cow's environment and metabolism during gestation shape her calf's size and metabolic health. That research appeared in Journal of Dairy Science, Animal and Reproduction, Fertility and Development.
While he led the national QC laboratory programme, his team validated methods for detecting heavy metals, antibiotic residues, vitamins and pathogens in animal feed and food. They also published widely cited reviews of antimicrobial use and resistance in livestock.
Expertise
He built national quality-control laboratories for livestock inputs and animal-source food. They run validated AAS, HPLC, LC-MS/MS and MALDI-TOF MS methods under a quality system aligned with ISO/IEC 17025.
Uses ultrasonography, hormonal assays and metabolic profiling to improve cattle and buffalo fertility.
Studies antimicrobial use, resistance surveillance, drug residues and toxic metals in the food chain.
Has 15+ years of agro-based poverty reduction work, including with DFID's Chars Livelihoods Programme.
Plans and delivers public projects, handles procurement, and leads multidisciplinary teams.
Designs needs-based training for staff and farmers, and tutored courses at Bangladesh Open University.
